Recycle Guardians: Transforming Lives with Grieg Foundation and Hand-in-Hand India

Earlier this year, the Grieg Foundation became a supporter of the CLOCC program, funding the awareness-raising, education, and training of 550 waste workers as part of our collaboration with Hand-in-Hand India and the broader CLOCC program in India. These workers, based in the coastal region of Tamil Nadu, home to 2.8 million people, face challenges due to inadequate waste management infrastructure.

After just three months, the Grieg Foundation's targeted support has already made a significant impact, empowering individuals economically, socially, and environmentally. The program promotes a more inclusive and sustainable approach to preventing waste leakage into the environment.

To date, 136 families of "Recycle Guardians" have been mobilized—comprising 123 male and 136 female waste pickers. This mobilization involved comprehensive engagement and education, as well as providing workers with fluorescent green t-shirts bearing the slogan, "We are Recycle Guardians, Not Waste Pickers."  The term Recycle Guardians was chosen to foster greater respect for the essential work these individuals perform. In addition, they have received training in basic literacy, numeracy, and skills development aimed at improving their socio-economic standing.

Meet Priya, a 26-year-old Recycle Guardian from Mamallapuram, who comes from a vulnerable community. She shares how the basic literacy and numeracy training has transformed her life. Before the program, Ms. Priya was unfamiliar with both Tamil and English letters, which made everyday tasks—such as reading street signs or understanding written instructions—difficult. Now, with her newfound ability to read and write, she can navigate forms, read important labels, and even assist others.

The training also covered public transportation, including bus routes and available services, significantly enhancing her independence and mobility. This new knowledge has boosted her confidence, enabling her to become more self-reliant and actively engaged in her community. For Ms. Priya, literacy has not only equipped her with practical skills but also instilled a deep sense of dignity and independence.

CLOCC extends its deep gratitude to the Grieg Foundation for making this transformative impact possible. With their support, we continue to strengthen the role of Recycle Guardians in India, empowering more individuals to take pride in their work and feel truly valued.
