As part of an initiative with the Global Methane Hub which is targeting methane emissions from poor waste management in seven rural municipalities, CLOCC is launching a school-based program in Banyuwangi, Indonesia. Education is a critical building block for building better waste management systems and the programme aims to empower future generations to lead the way.

With just 5% of rural waste currently treated in Banyuwangi, this programme is responding to an urgent environmental and public health need.

CLOCC, with its local implementation partner, the Rijig Pradana Wetan Foundation, are working with five schools to implement a hands-on waste awareness curriculum. Already reaching more than 1,280 students and 80 teachers, the program will teach the basics of source separation by providing waste containers at schools as well as environmentally responsible habits through simple but impactful changes, such as the provision of drinking water dispensers, reusable water bottles, and lunchboxes.

Each participating school receives waste bins, water dispensers, educational materials, and ongoing support through monthly visits and progress check-ins. Teachers are trained as ambassadors, and regular meetings with school principals ensure long-term adoption. Parents are engaged through socialization events and community meetings, creating a supportive ecosystem for sustainable change both at school and at home.

In addition to behavioural change, the program also features interactive components like school waste audits, biowaste projects, and trips to local waste facilities. These activities link classroom learning to real-world impact, while giving students tangible roles in building a cleaner, healthier community.

Over the next year, the educational aspect of the project with Global Methane Hub will play a critical role in the broader goals, which aims to treat nearly 4,000 tons of waste, reduce methane emissions, and create new livelihood opportunities in rural Banyuwangi. By anchoring this change in education, CLOCC is ensuring that the lessons last well beyond the project’s timeline.
